When BSEM Students Turned a Fake Wedding into a Real Event-Management Experience

What happens when you give event management students the responsibility of creating an entire wedding from scratch?

You get Knot By Chance ’26 — a one-of-a-kind fake wedding experience conceptualised, planned and executed by the students of the Bhawanipur School of Event Management (BSEM).

Designed to replicate the excitement, pressure and complexity of a real wedding, Knot By Chance was much more than a classroom project. From Haldi and Mehendi to food, décor, sponsors, guest experiences and influencer management, BSEM students stepped into different roles to bring the entire celebration to life.

From Classroom Learning to a Real Wedding Setup

At BSEM, students don’t just learn about events — they get opportunities to understand what it takes to execute them.

Knot By Chance was created as an immersive learning experience where students could put their event-management skills to the test. They had to work with teams, manage timelines, coordinate with vendors and partners, handle guests and influencers, and ensure that every element came together seamlessly.

The result was a wedding that looked and felt real — even though the couple, the ceremonies and the celebration were all part of the experience.

Every Detail Had a Role to Play

A successful wedding is made up of hundreds of moving parts, and Knot By Chance gave students the opportunity to experience exactly that.
The event recreated key wedding experiences including:

Haldi & Mehendi: Bringing traditional wedding celebrations to life.
Food & Hospitality: Planning guest experiences and ensuring smooth hospitality.
Sponsor Management: Understanding how brand partnerships work within live events.
Influencer Management: Coordinating with creators and managing event visibility.
Bride & Groom Experience: Designing personalised experiences around the central guests.
Event Execution: Coordinating multiple teams and elements while keeping the event on schedule.

Every student had a responsibility, and every responsibility contributed to the larger event.

Where Creativity Meets Coordination

One of the biggest lessons from Knot By Chance was that successful events aren’t created by one person.

They are created through teamwork, communication, planning and the ability to adapt when things don’t go according to plan.

Students had to collaborate across departments, make quick decisions and solve challenges as they emerged — giving them a glimpse into the realities of working in the professional event industry.
And that’s where the true value of a live event experience lies.

An Experience They Could Add to Their Portfolio

While Knot By Chance ’26 may have been a fictional wedding, everything that came with it was completely real.

The deadlines. The stakeholders. The guest experience. The brand representation. The pressure of an event where every single detail is visible — and every mistake is too.

The experience gave them more than a certificate or classroom assignment. It gave them practical work to talk about in interviews, content to showcase in their portfolios, and an event experience that demonstrated their ability to work as part of a professional team.

For anyone building a career in weddings, corporate events, concerts, entertainment or experiential marketing — that gap between understanding a concept and actually applying it under pressure is the most important gap to close. Knot By Chance ’26 closed it.

Not every event management lesson fits inside a classroom. Some of them have to be lived in real time, with real artists, in front of a real crowd that has no interest in waiting for you to feel ready.

This semester, BSEM brought EPR Iyer — the rapper known from MTV Hustle, one of India’s most watched hip-hop platforms to campus for a live rap battle. And then handed the entire production to the students.

Not as observers. Not as assistants. As the event management team.

Who EPR Iyer is — and why this mattered

EPR Iyer is not an emerging artist looking for a platform. He is a name that audiences across India already know — from his journey on MTV Hustle, the country’s most prominent stage for independent rap talent, where his performances earned him recognition from some of the biggest names in Indian hip-hop.

Bringing an artist of that stature to a campus event raises the stakes for everyone involved. The crowd expectations are higher. The artist requirements are more demanding. The margin for error is smaller. And the skills required to pull it off — crowd management, artist care, logistics, real-time problem solving — are exactly the skills BSEM exists to build.

When the artist is someone the crowd already knows and loves, you cannot afford an average event experience. The bar was set the moment his name was announced.

Managing a hip-hop crowd with a known artist on stage is one of the most charged environments in live events. Student handled entry queues, crowd positioning, floor safety, and real time energy management throughout the battle.

Receiving the artist, green room coordination, stage briefing, performance call times, and post-show handoff. Every touchpoint in the artist journey was a student responsibility.

BSEM students have managed luxury weddings, corporate productions, sports events, and large-scale concerts. Each format teaches different things. The rap battle added something distinct to that education.

A rap battle crowd is not passive. It is not seated and sipping champagne. It is loud, opinionated, and actively participating in what’s happening on stage. Managing that crowd, keeping energy high without losing control, reading the room when tension peaks, maintaining safety without breaking the atmosphere is a specific and demanding skill.

A hip-hop crowd shifts fast. Students learned to anticipate — not just react — to changes in crowd density, movement, and mood as the battle intensified.
Managing a nationally recognised artist
EPR Iyer’s rider, requirements, and expectations as an MTV Hustle alum are different from a local act. Students learned what professional artist management actually demands.
Maintaining format integrity under pressure
A rap battle has a competitive structure. Students had to manage the format — rounds, timing, judging logistics — while simultaneously managing everything around it.
Making invisible decisions
The crowd never knew when something needed adjusting. That invisibility — the ability to solve problems without breaking the experience — is the highest skill in live event management.

Bhawanipur College recently turned into an arena of energy, ambition, and a fair share of nervous excitement as MTV Roadies Gang Leader Baseer Ali, along with his partner Farhan, arrived on campus to conduct live auditions for the show. For students dreaming of a spot on India’s most iconic reality show, this wasn’t just an audition — it was a shot at winning coveted Jump the Queue passes, a fast-track into the Roadies selection process.

But while the spotlight was on the auditionees and the Gang Leaders, there was another team working just as hard to make the day happen — and this one wasn’t on camera.

A Real Test for Aspiring Event Managers

For BSEM students, this event was more than just another item on the calendar — it was a live demonstration of exactly what they’re trained for.

Managing a celebrity guest appearance, a high-energy crowd, and a fast-paced audition format all at once is the kind of scenario that can’t be taught through lectures alone. It’s learned by doing.

This is the philosophy BSEM builds its entire program around: real events, real pressure, real experience. Long before graduation, students are already working alongside recognizable names and managing situations that mirror the industry they’re stepping into.

More Than Just an Audition

For the participating students of Bhawanipur College, the event was a rare opportunity to audition in front of an actual Roadies Gang Leader, with a genuine chance to earn a Jump the Queue pass and skip ahead in the competitive Roadies selection journey. The energy on campus reflected that stakes — equal parts excitement, ambition, and adrenaline, the very spirit Roadies has built its reputation on.

By the end of the event, 15 talented students had earned their Jump the Queue passes — a significant head start for anyone serious about making it onto the show.

The celebration didn’t stop there: BSEM students and the wider BSEM team also got the chance to click pictures with Baseer Ali and Farhan, turning a high-pressure workday into a memorable one.

Events like this highlight exactly what sets event management education apart — it isn’t just about planning parties or decorating venues. It’s about logistics under pressure, coordination with high-profile guests, and delivering a seamless experience for hundreds of participants, all while staying calm when things inevitably shift in real time.

As Baseer Ali and Farhan wrapped up auditions and Bhawanipur College buzzed with excitement over its 15 newest Jump the Queue winners, one thing was clear: behind every well-run event, there’s a team making it happen — and this time, that team was built entirely of students learning to lead.
